On the iPad, there are various options to set limits and restrictions on Apps, iPad use, content, privacy, etc. Click here to learn more about Screen Time on Apple devices.
Because we use managed Apple IDs on our student iPads, the option to control this using Family Sharing is not fully functional. Therefore, any limits or restrictions set must be done on student iPads directly. Parents can then set a passcode to set limits and restrictions. Important: Some Apps that may be distracting may be used in classes, so we recommend setting limits rather than full restrictions. Here is how on the student iPad:
- If you haven't already, go to Settings > Screen Time > App & Website Activity. Tap "Turn on App & Website Activity".
- Go to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit. From here, you can choose categories, specific Apps, and even specific websites.
- Set a Screen Time Passcode: Go to Settings > Screen Time > Lock Screen Time Settings and set a passcode only you know to protect the settings. Also, please remember this code!
- Enable Block at End of Limit: In App Limits, select the app or category and enable the 'Block at End of Limit' option. This prevents the "Ignore Limit" option from appearing.

Important Notes
- If parents have set restrictions on the student's personal Apple ID to "Ask to Buy" on the App Store, this restriction needs to be temporarily turned off, as it conflicts with managed Apple ID settings. Once the needed Apps/books are downloaded, the parents can reactivate the restriction.
- The use of 3rd-party Apps for parental control and monitoring is likely not to work due to their use of VPNs or conflicts with our mobile device management.
- Finally, suppose all of the above have been done, and some Apps continue to be a distraction for a student. In that case, parents should contact the student counselor to identify options that the school may be able to take via mobile device management.
