The school does place restrictions on iPads for students, faculty and staff. Most of the restrictions relate to recommended security settings to protect privacy and data. Student iPads have more restrictions that are related to age-appropriate access (no 17+ Apps), keeping the iPad running smoothly, or when parents request to do so for individual students.
The most popular Apps that are restricted or blocked on iPads are social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, ...) and streaming media (Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, ...). These sites are also blocked on the school network. Personally owned devices should be used for those who want to use these sites off campus.
For parents that want additional restrictions placed on the SMA iPad please click the following link: Screen Time – SMA Tech Help Center (zendesk.com)
Please visit our Responsible Use Policy to learn more: Responsible Use Policy - St. Mary's Academy 2020 (stmaryspdx.org)
Internet providers often include the ability to set restrictions and/or limits on your home network. Please visit their website or contact their customer service to learn more.
Although we don't go into great detail here on why a specific App may be blocked (since there are over 2 million Apps) we would be happy to provide that information. Simply submit a request above.
Important Note: Freshmen iPads will only allow the installation of Apps useful for classes and schoolwork. Although we do allow Spotify. Students can request that an App be allowed to be installed (except games which must be requested by a teacher for classes) by sending an email to Tech Help. We will confirm that it is safe, and that the Administration is okay with allowing it.
