Backing up your iPad is REALLY important and it is the responsibility of the students, faculty and staff to verify it is working.
Go to Settings > tap your name at the top left > iCloud > iCloud Backup
Ensure that iCloud Backup is ON and that you have a recent backup.
If it has been more than a week go ahead and tap "Back Up Now". If the backup fails you either do not have enough iCloud storage or there may be a problem with your iPad. If this is the case submit a ticket to Tech Help @ SMA for assistance.
