iPad Battery and Charging

The SMA iPads came with a brand new 12W charger and USB to lightning cable (or 20W charger and USB-C to lightning cable - Generation 8 & 9).

These should easily last 4+ years with proper care and will charge your iPad very quickly.  iPads will typically charge with others sources but not as quickly. For example, the charger that comes with the iPhone only delivers 5W of charging power so it will be much slower.

With online collaboration relying heavily on video communications this can often drain the battery more quickly.  Thus iPads may have to be plugged in during the school day.  Note: Using a different charger other than what came with the iPad may result in the battery charge going down when using even if plugged into power.

If your charger or cable has become damaged or lost:

Solutions: If available bring damaged charger and/or cable to Tech Office staff for replacement and recycling. For a new replacement it is $20 each ($40 for both). For a used replacement it is $5 each ($10 for both). Used cables/chargers are in limited supply and only one replacement per person per school year is allowed. Note: If students withdrawal from SMA and these items are damaged or missing it is $5 each ($10 for both). Payment can be cash, check (made out to St. Mary's Academy) or click here to pay online. We do recommend only using Apple branded cables and chargers as other brands can be problematic and cause damage to the iPad. Upon graduation (or withdraw) the charger/cable returned must be Apple brand of charger (12W or 20W as noted above) and USB to lightning cable or the family will be charged. No exceptions.
