The following are steps you can try if your Apple Pencil (Generation 1 or USB-C) is no longer working with your iPad. Check to see if it is working after each step.
- Make sure your Apple Pencil is fully charged.
- Turn on Airplane Mode for 2 minutes and then turn it back on.
- Turn off Bluetooth for 2 minutes and then turn back on.
- Unscrew the tip of the Apple Pencil. Then screw it back on making sure not to make it too tight or too loose. Replace the tip if damaged or missing.
- Close (swipe up) all of the Apps you have running on your iPad and then power off your iPad (Settings > General > Shut Down > Swipe bar right). Wait 2 minutes and then power back on.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth > to the right of the Apple Pencil > Forget this Device > Forget Device. Power off your iPad (Settings > General > Shut Down > Swipe bar right). Wait 2 minutes and then power back on. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and reconnect your Apple Pencil to the iPad with the USB cable to pair it again.
- Make sure you have updated to the latest version of iPadOS (Settings > General > Software Update > Download/Install).
- Make sure your Apple Pencil is fully charged.
If none of the steps above work to get your Apple Pencil working again, we recommend checking the information at https://support.apple.com/en-us/108788 or chatting, calling, or making an appointment with a local Apple store: https://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
Note: Apple Pencils will typically stop working after 2.5 years or if they were dropped on the tip at which point you would have to purchase a new one.
