When you connect a keyboard to the iPad it may behave strangely in various Apps. Most notably pressing Space won't actually create a space but do something different that you don't want. When this happens go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards > Full Keyboard Access > Commands. There you will see a list of keyboard shortcuts that do various things. Under BASIC find Activate and tap it. Then select Clear.
Typically other issues that may be happening with Bluetooth keyboards can be resolved with one of the following:
- Make sure your keyboard is fully charged and/or has new batteries.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the "i" off to the right of the keyboard and Forget This Device. Then go through the steps to reconnect it. Consult your keyboard instructions on the process to reconnect.
